Dixon Hawke

D C Thomson Ltd., based in Dundee, were the major rivals of Amalgamated Press for whom Brooks contributed most of his stories.  Because of their location, they were less afflicted by paper shortages and other problems which eventually brought so many of the southern-based story papers to an end, and they have dominated the market since that time. Brooks already had a relationship with Thomson through his Dixon Hawke and Marco stories, and as Amalgamated Press struggled, he contributed more to the Scottish publishers.

In the period between 1923 to 1937 Brooks had written twenty-six Dixon Hawke Library stories, most of them featuring Marco the Miracle Man, a clone of Waldo.  Although the characters are Sexton Blake copies, many of the stories are original.

The Return of Marko, the Miracle Man

Marko story. Half book-length story.

Note:            (i) A second story “The Miser of Mortlake” concerning the character the Microbe who appeared in no. 258  was written and paid for but never published.

(ii) The character of Marko made further appearances with Dixon Hawke in  D C Thomson’s The Adventure, but it is extremely unlikely that ESB played any part in the writing of these stories.
